Dennis,
I don't have a service manual, but my instruction manual came with a
schematic. If you're technically savvy, you can glean the information
you need. If you'll send me an SASE, I'll send you a photocopy of the
manual.
To help get you going: it looks like VC401 adjusts the 9.000 MHz
oscillator's frequency, which can be measured at TP401. The 38.86667
MHz oscillator is set by VC402 and looks like it puts the receiver
on frequency. YMMV.

Actually, there are some nice capacitors made with a capacitance of 1 Farad.
They are odd beasts, and are intended to be used instead of batteries in
devices like VCRs and such. They are a nice thing to use, since there is
no battery which will need to be replaced (and which could leak) later on.
In consumer electronics, such as VCRs, they keep the clock running during
short power outages.

Does anyone have a manual for a Heathkit HW-101 or would be willing
to make copies of the important items such as parts list, alignment,
theory of operation and diagrams? Does anyone know if Heath still
sells manuals for older equipment or if another company makes these
available? Thanks for your help.

I have a pcs2000 that I had to hardwire inside the radio onto the edge

is to use the radio for packet than I can give you further instructions on
the mod. It actually worked out better for me the way it turned out.

Subject: How About the Scout?
Regarding the Scout:
1) I don't think of it as a QRP rig--with 50 watts out, it's a
lightweight (as opposed to heavyweight) transceiver.
2) It has a few minor warts--potential to drift in certain
circumstances, tiny bit of processor whine on audio.
3) The Jones filter is good, but not quite the same as a full-
blown crystal filter.
4) The receiver is very sensitive.
5) The rig is EXTREMELY easy to use--appropriate for the new
ham, or one who likes to get "back to basics."
6) It's a lot of fun! I got mine to take on vacation/camping
trips (yet to happen), and I frequently turn off my Paragon
at home and use the Scout on 40 meter CW and have a ball!
The Scout is not the ultimate rig, and if you want fancy (and
harder to operate) get a TS-50. I like mine and plan to hold
onto it for travel and as a backup HF transceiver.

Hi,
I have been looking at HTs and have come down to these to brands,
and would seek Net Wisdom. On the kenwood side I like the new
th79a, I'm not sure on the Yaesu, maybe the ft-530? I would
be real interested in hearing personal experiences. What are
some of the good features and bad/lack of features of each?
Thanks for your time,

I have seen both and played around with them. My personal pref would be
more towards the 78A rather than the 79A. 78A can allow for more memories,
up to 250 with expansion memory. It has memory scan lockout where the 79A
doesn't. Audio output is a tad better also. I own a 78A and compared to
79A, I'll keep the 78A. I have also played with the 530. It does have an
excellent tx audio. Best I've heard from an HT. But battery life and
intermod, which Yaesu is known for, still exists.
I shopped for a few months before I bought the 78A. Have loved it ever
since. Just be aware of the 79A, it's not all its racked up to be, just
because it has FETS...

i've recently aquired and HTX-100 rig that has possibly been operated without
a proper load, and there is DEFINITELY a big bad short between the center
feed and the shielding. does anyone out there have any suggestions as to
what might be blown?
also, assuming that this thing gets fixed, i've heard rumors of a power mod
for this rig. is it worth it? if so, where can i find a copy of the
schematics?
thanks,

I assume you are talking about doppler type direction finding units.
If so, try the article in 73 Magazine, June 1991, page 32. It's a
construction article featuring the Doppler Systems unit. This is an
early version, but an excellent version.
Also, check the book "Transmitter Hunting, Radio Direction Finding
Simplified" by Joseph Moell, K0OV and Thomas Curlee, WB6UZZ, TAB Books,
ISBN 0-8306-2701-4. Another doppler unit is described starting on page
123, the Roanoke Doppler DF. I think a kit version is available, but I
don't remember where.

Hi ppl.
MAYBE someone can help me. I just bought Realistic DX302 receiver (second hand)
and I haven't got the slightest idea what the specifications are.
Maybe someone came across one of them, sometime. Maybe. Probably :)
Thanx in advance.

Subject: Need Info/Manual for Collins HF-8040
I am looking for a manual or any information on the Rockwell International/
Collins HF-8040 Antenna Coupler. This device is a remote control, high power
end fed wire tuner which was made for military use or some such.
Collins does have the manual available, for $100, but they could not tell
me if the manual included schematics, etc. The device contains a very large
motorized inductor (which has associated with it a few vacuum relays),
two motorized vacuum variable capacitors, a power supply, an SWR sensor
and a logic board.
It is possible that this device is an automatic tuner, or at least a completely
remote control tuner. A friend and I each bought one. The plan is to load a
long wire of some sort, and perhaps use it to tune baloon lofted vertical
wires on field day.
Any any all information or experience with this equipment would be most
appreciated!

Subject: TH-78A: Digital Squelch?
Is there a way to program the Kenwood TH-78A to use digital squelch either in
rx or tx? I'm trying to monitor my school's security frequency; but they
use a digital squelch on their radios and while I can hear them ,I also hear
a nearby delivery company that operates on the same frequency using pl-tones.
Anyhow, I'm trying to separate the first from the second. Can someone please
tell me if this possible. Please email any responses.
